Wilson sporting goods are primarily known for their experience producing high-quality tennis and American football equipment, but their reach into golf shouldn’t go unnoticed, having produced a range of golfing equipment under the brand name Wilson Staff since 1914.
Wilson is one of the best value golfing brands on the market. The brand produces equipment, clubs, and golf balls that are primarily focused on beginner and mid-range handicappers but also provides elite-level golfing equipment for some golfers operating on professional tours.
In this guide, I’ll be investigating whether Wilson Staff is a good golfing brand while also looking into the types of golfers who would benefit the most from using these clubs. Wilson also produces a wide range of equipment, including golf balls, bags, and clothing, and I’ll be looking into how these accessories can help you improve your golfing game.
Why Is Wilson A Good Golf Brand?
Wilson has over 100 years of experience producing high-quality game-improvement irons at great value prices. For that reason, the brand has unrivaled experience in this area and produces excellent clubs and equipment that can help high and mid-range handicappers hit better shots.
Sporting goods manufacturer Wilson was originally founded in 1913 and prides itself on supplying the most durable, performance-enhancing equipment for some of the world’s best athletes. Their equipment is revered and recognized around the world as being some of the best in the business.
But its golfing brand Wilson Staff is one of the best brands in the industry and for the simple reason that it produces a broad range of affordable equipment that can cater to all types of golfers. Beginner golfers, mid-range handicappers, and anyone looking for a more cost-effective set of clubs keep reading as Wilson Staff might be a great brand of clubs for you!
Even for top-range golfers working towards a scratch handicap, Wilson can help provide a revolutionary change to your performance, as they have worked to produce revolutionary equipment over the past 100 years.
Wilson was the revolutionary brand that turned the modern golf ball into a high-powered flight machine. In 1954, the brand produced a new Wilson Staff golf ball with multiple layers and a softer casing that could fly up to 40 percent faster than other golf balls on the market. Today the brand still produces some of the best and perhaps most underrated golf balls on the market, which might I add, are a great brand of ball for beginners to use to help produce better connections on their shots.
You can pick up a pack of their Zip Golf Balls on Amazon for a great price, or perhaps pick up a colored set of their DUO Professional golf balls that can give you better ball flight and distances off the tee.
The importance of picking the right golf ball to use as a beginner can infinitely change the way you play. It’s best not to pick a too-hard ball and try not to play with golf balls that are too soft either. I talk more about the different types of golf balls you should play within my guide that I recommend you read on what makes up a golf ball, but Wilson Staff balls are a perfect option for any beginner or mid-range golfer.
The other great thing about Wilson Staff is that they are the best at producing and selling full club sets. No other brand produces quite as many full club sets as Wilson, and the brand is perhaps one of the best for producing junior and teenager club sets. You’ll be able to find the right club set for your needs on Amazon for a bargain Still, I recommend looking into the 2021 Wilson Men’s and Teens complete golf set for beginner golfers, available for a very affordable price on Amazon now.
Confused about what’s the best golf brand for you? To clear things up I recommend reading my complete golf brand guide.
This set, like each of their other sets, comes with a complete range of clubs from a driver to putter and will also contain a range of irons from a five to a nine, which will help beginner golfers traverse the winding fairways at your local course.
The great thing about each of these irons and drivers is that they all have huge sweet spots, have cavity-backed club heads, and have wide toes, which give more forgiveness to players, enabling less-experienced golfers to get a much cleaner stroke through on their shots.
For more information on how cavity-backed irons can help a lower-handicapped golfer, check out my guide, which goes into greater detail on how much beginner golfers should be looking to spend on a set of clubs.
Wilson is one of few brands that produce club sets for senior golfers. Golf is an ageless game, and whether you’re 17 or 71, everyone should be able to play this beautiful sport. That is certainly Wilson’s philosophy, and the brand has engineered a set of clubs designed specifically for senior players in their SGI Men’s Complete Golf Set available for a steal on Amazon
These clubs have slightly more flex in their graphite shafts and also have slightly larger diameter all weather grips, as well as a large sweet spot. Matching those features together, the brand allows senior golfers to swing through their shots comfortably and strike easy, fluid strokes that will help you take numerous shots off your scorecards. For more information and details on how to buy these senior clubs, head over to Amazon.com here.
Wilson also provides some of the best posture assisting golf bags in the industry. From stand bags to cart bags, you’ll find a club carry-all that is perfect for your needs as a golfer on the Wilson website. If you’re still stuck on which bag is best for your needs, I have done the research for you and have put my findings on the most cost-effective and best golf bags into a one-size-fits-all golf bag guide that you can find at this link.
But unless you’re a professional golfer or often use golf caddies around the course, I wouldn’t stray too far from a classic stand-up golf bag, and Wilson’s experience producing stand bags is renowned. Coming in various colorways on Amazon, Wilson Staff’s EXO II Golf Bag is the perfect and most lightweight golf bag that will help you save energy while you carry your clubs around the course.
The bag itself is made of 100% polyester and features multiple handy pockets that you can safely store all your belongings in without worrying about rain or mud soaking your car keys or mobile phone. Similarly, the bag also has a 5-way club compartment, which provides ample storage for your clubs and protects your grips from the elements if you’re playing in the rain. If you’re after a good, hardwearing golf bag, head over to Amazon now and purchase the Wilson EXO today!
And when it comes to apparel, Wilson is again one of the best in the game, notably supplying the most durable golfing gloves to players worldwide. Golf gloves need to be hard-wearing and can be seriously expensive if you are like me and wear through three or four gloves per season, playing relentless golf.
That’s where Wilson steps ahead of the rest with their classic, aerated, soft-grip golf glove. It’s designed to protect your hand from the wear and tear of your club’s grip, and these gloves are tacky and durable and help golfers swing through powerful shots from tee to green. The gloves are available on Amazon.com at a meager price, and if I were you, I’d bulk order two or three so that you never run out of gloves on the course.
Overall, Wilson is a great golfing brand for the accessories and equipment they produce. Their range of apparel, gloves, bags, and club sets are perfect for helping modern golfers get around the course in fewer shots. But the main draw for many golfers and this brand are the clubs they produce. Let’s now look at why their clubs are so good at assisting golfers of different experience levels.
Are Wilson Golf Clubs Underrated
Wilson Staff golf clubs are highly underrated. Wilson is not the most well-known brand for producing high-performance irons, but the brand uses cutting-edge technology to produce affordable high-performing equipment for average golfers and even lower handicappers.
Wilson produces some of the best quality golf clubs for beginner, mid-range, and junior golfers. But the great thing about this brand is that they also produce some high-performance clubs that are great for mid-range to lower handicappers looking to shave shots off their scorecard and hit much better and fluid shots.
The brand is very underrated in terms of the clubs they produce. Compared to the likes of Titleist and TaylorMade, who invest millions of dollars annually into producing high-performance clubs for the PGA and European Tours, Wilson doesn’t quite have the same technology or research behind their top-spec clubs, which makes them an underdog against these top brands.
I go into more detail about why TaylorMade is such a good golf club manufacturer in my guide, which you should read which explains whether it’s worth purchasing a set of TaylorMade clubs. But Wilson can hold their own against these brands and looking at their range of complex irons on their site, they provide much greater dexterity than the likes of Titleist.
For top-range golfers, the quality Wilson put into their high-spec irons, like their top-range Staff Model Blade irons. These clubs are simply stunning and reflect Wilson’s long history of producing forged iron golf clubs. If you’re looking for muscle off the tee, and precision in approach, these are a very underrated set of irons perfect for lower handicappers.
Beginners, be warned! These are not the right irons for you, as firstly they are an expensive club for what you should be purchasing, but are also very unforgiving as a golf club. For more advice on the types of clubs beginners and high handicappers should be buying, visit my walkthrough on the types of clubs beginner golfers should look to purchase.
But on that note, Wilson also has iron sets readily available for mid-range gofers, including their LaunchPad Graphite Irons. Similar to the Cleveland Launcher irons, which I have reviewed in my guide on the Cleveland golf brand, these irons are hybrids that have a thick heel that gives players greater bounce off the turf. That enables golfers to strike better, more fluid shots and enjoy playing their round.
Between their high performance and beginner irons, Wilson split the difference with their game improvement D9 irons. These are perhaps the best clubs to help players who sit between the ten and 20 handicap range shave shots off their round. Featuring a small cavity on the clubhead’s back but a profile and balance that mimics a blade iron, users get the best of both worlds of a forgiving yet high-speed generating golf club.
This club set is available on Amazon today in a variety of club settings that includes left and right-handed orientation, graphite or steel shafts, and golfers are also able to choose the type of shaft flex available in their club set. For that reason, Amazon is perhaps the best place to purchase these clubs, so don’t hang around till they’re alls old out; secure yours today!
Aside from irons, Wilson also produces a great range of drivers, including their performance-enhancing D7 Drivers built for both male and female golfers. The D7 driver is one of the cheaper, high-performance driving clubs on the market. It rivals the Cleveland Launcher Turbo as a great club to use if you’re trying to improve your ball striking as an intermediate golfer simply because of its ginormous sweet spot. For that reason, this is another great and underrated club I’d advise any player looking to reduce their handicap purchases.
Finally, Wilson has experience producing some of the highest quality forged wedges in golf. Many professionals and club pros regard these wedges as some of the bounciest and tacky clubs on the market that is perfect for any golfer looking to add more spin and flop to their work around the greens. Check out the Wilson website for more information on how these clubs can change your golfing game, but if you’re stuck on what wedges you should be buying, take a look at my no-nonsense guide on what wedges you should have in your club bag for your abilities as a golfer.
